If you add to a table, memory foam, a faux, feather pillow topper, a table heater, vinyl cover, crisp, clean linens and a heated throw for the feet, you will have created the world's most comfortable massage table.
Your massage table is the foundation of your business. It's one of the most important features and so many therapists miss the opportunity to use it to its full potential!
It's awful to spend the time and money for a massage, only to be sore afterwards from a rock-hard table!
If you're working on fit people like athletes, those really firm tables probably work great. For those of us who are tender, they are torture tables. I remember the first time I had a 90 min on one and my ribs hurt so bad for days. It was like laying on concrete. Most of my clients are swollen and tender just due to my lymphatic specialty. They need pillowy softness to cradle their aching bodies.
My clients RAVE about my massages and my table is a big part of that. I always giggle when my regulars get a massage on vacation at these really nice high-end spas. They always like to give me a full report when they come back. Before they even mention the massage itself, they always say the table didn't measure up!
Make sure you measure up! Upgrade your table NOW!
Here is the formula:
Start with a layer of memory foam. I like 2 inches thick. Grab a twin size and you can easily trim it down to size if it's too big. An electric knife works great.
Next grab a faux feather pillow topper. Make sure it's not real down feathers as some clients may be allergic! This really gives that cloudy softness! I've had mine for quite a long time. I couldn't find the exact one I have but this is a great option with 4.5 stars.
Add a mattress heater. I've tried a lot of brands over the years and have the best luck with Sunbeam products lasting the longest. They usually have a 5-year guarantee so be sure to save your receipt. If you’re tired of arriving at the office early to turn your table heater on, check out this Wi-fi enabled option! It has mixed reviews so if you give it a try, please let me know how it works!
Use a vinyl table cover to create a subitizable barrier that's easy to clean. This is the exact cover I have. It will be very tight when you first place it over the layers but will stretch within a short time.
Crisp clean linens are a joy to slide into. After years of trying so many different fabrics my favorite is cotton percale. They wash up nicely, dry quickly and don't wrinkle too easily. I'm personally not a fan of microfibers. They tend to be too shifty on the table. They slide around, don't stay put, and stain very badly.
Keeping your linens smelling and feeling clean and fresh is so important. It's so gross when the sheets feel sticky from oil and have a rancid smell. But PLEASE DON'T resort to using scented laundry soap and softener! Allergies are at an all-time high and as someone who is severely allergic to most everything it can definitely ruin a massage for me. I've had fantastic massages at places where the only reason I didn't return was either the linens or something in the air triggered me.
I use Ecos laundry detergent plus a product called Odoban anytime my sheets need freshening. It does have a light eucalyptus scent. I always run an extra rinse cycle on the load to minimize it. It also sanitizes bodily fluids such as blood.
I like to use fleece blankets like this one. They dry super-fast and I can fit 4 in a load without it getting too heavy. Take care of your washing machine and she'll take care of you!
The final pièce de résistance: the heated throw over the feet! If you're cold like me, you can spend an entire 90 min with the table heater on blast and still have popsicle toes!
The heated throw takes it over the top. It feels amazing after coming in from the frigid winter weather and tucking your feet into a haven of warmth! It will instantly help your clients relax and unwind, making your job that much easier and spoiling them rotten so they never want to get off your table! This is one of the safest models on the market and consumes about one-thirtieth the energy of traditional heaters.
I hope you upgrade your table today and let me know what your clients think. Follow me for more tips and tricks that helped me build a successful fully booked practice for 27 years.
Here's to you! Let's make 2025 rock!
